So here is my first published test video of using Google Glass while driving. Not too long of a video really just meant to walk through what it is like to video with Google Glass in the car. Before this video I made a couple test videos that I was really happy with and on my third try I feel I nailed a much better video shot. Even now I have a couple more that I want to edit up and post up as well.

Here are some notes about the video I would like to make:

I have a face for radio and a voice for silent movies...sorry about that

The inside of the car is rather dark due to my window tint

Night videos are awful because the camera has a terrible video ISO

At 1:50 you will see a BMW cross two lanes of traffic for an onramp

The video is 720p, but other factors really limit quality, I am going to try and clean it up as best I can for future videos.

I hope to get a couple videos up a week starting with another in car driving video and a then a walk around of a car.

This is awesome, thanks for sharing!

Can you comment on what it's physically like to drive with Glass on? I've never worn them, but I would assume we're dealing with something that's no more invasive than a HUD system in a car.

The UK quickly banned Glass for drivers, but I'm wondering how disruptive it even is. My guess: not at all.

Google glass has its perks but at the same time theres a lot of people getting in on the market with potentially better products. I also find it funny because with a simple mount a smartphone would do an even better job. It would look somewhat stupid to have a smartphone duct taped to your head but google glass is not inconspicuous itself.

The Glass sits high, even with your eye brows, so it is out of your direct vision. It does sit in a spot within your vision so you can still see it with you moving your eyes to far off center so you still get a good visual of what is ahead of you. I will try to show everyone in my next video.

What I like about Glass is were it sits on my head, the interaction, user interface, and the fact you can see my hands and how I interact from a first person perspective. I think other items like it will show up but Google will have a good lead especially since it is already so well done in beta phase.

two turn lanes makes it worse, not better, that means that you should have turned right into the closest lane in case someone your perhaps didn't see in the left right turn lane came around with you and you hit them because you casually move over three lanes to the left

How does it store the photos/videos/files? I would assume either a microSD card of immense capacity, or either wifi/cellular to the google cloud or to a Glass device in the car?

Your interior appears dark not because of window tint, but because of limited dynamic range on the camera sensor. Dynamic range is ratio between brightest and darkest parts of the picture. The human eye is said to have twice the dynamic range of a camera sensor, and your Google Glass is exposing for outdoor lighting, so your dash appears too dark.

Heavier tint would help the camera in this case.

I can't wait to see somebody actually wearing Google glass get their skull crushed by an ex-mobster in witsec. Or anyone whose life depends on anonymity be it a woman on the lam from violent boyfriend to a Dexter who doesn't want to get busted. Or anyone who just values privacy. Or anyone who thinks you've been looking at their kid a little too long. Or a cop. Or anyone who recognizes Google for what they are and wants to fight back while there's still a chance. When Google glass becomes widely available, violence is going to skyrocket - although your Google search results may omit why there's an explosion in people being punched, shot and stabbed from behind.

I actually wear glasses as well and it fits just fine, it was designed with that in mind. Also there is a built in 8GB of storage in the Glass itself that uploads to a G+ account when it is plugged into power. You can then download and manage your pictures and video from there.

You mention being able to see speed and tach, but we clearly cannot see it in this video. Are there settings you can adjust on the Google Glass? I too have dark tint and black interior, but my GoPro is still able to adjust quite well with its spot metering...

I also have the GoPro mounted right behind my seat, so you can see out the side windows and the entire windshield, along with my speedo/tach and gearshift. Yes, you don't get to see my head turn unless I have the helmet mount on, but let's be realistic: in a crash, watching video from your head would be useless with any sudden movement. A fixed camera provides a better perspective in my opinion.

my point was not regarding multiple turn lanes, he mentioned the additional lanes, mine was regarding the requirement to turn into your closest lane and then indicate to move across, which should also be done in stages not a blast across multiples. Apparently, the people republic have rules that permit such shenanigans... to which I have no comment.

Sounds expensive though, and suppose i don't have nor want a G+ account. I don't need yet another website account.

I read that this system is still in the "Explorer Edition" stage and changes may be made, a la XBox One's switcheroo with its DRM and used games features and always-online connectivity. Would be nice to include a microSD card slot, as 8GB is not enough for some things, and not everyone is going to want to create a G+ account, especially if internet connections are slow (I know we all have wifi and high-speed connections, but there are some areas that do not have this luxury, like my 2nd place in upstate NY which has no TV, internet or cell service).

Pity if you follow that to the explicit letter, on the turn in question you're forced to swing even -wider- since the nearest right lane is an exit only.

Also, since, as far as that lane is concerned, the lane you are turning into is one way (you are not allowed to make a left turn from the street/lane in question), I wonder if this rule applies:

Kinja'd!!!

Right turn from a one-way street into a one-way street. Start the turn in the far right lane. If safe, you may end the turn in any lane. Sometimes, signs or pavement markings will let you turn right from another lane, as shown by the graphic 6.

Someone else filled me in on the technicals about how the Glass is not the best camera out there for this lighting situation. I think where you can really gain with Glass is adding it in with other video methods, again this was one of the first runs. Soon I will have some video that is intermixed with Go Pro and my Panasonic.

This is an interesting point of discussion. I'm barred from driving because of some blind spots I have. My left eye has only peripheral vision, but that's not the problem. Many people with only one eye drive. The problem is due to a tiny blind spot on my right eye. I don't even know it's there unless a very specific set of circumstances is in play - the mind fills in the blanks. The point is this blind spot is right about where Glass sits in one's field of vision and my blind spot is even smaller than Glass' footprint on the field of vision and, most importantly, can't and won't ever contain any distracting information unrelated to the task at hand. So, you might say I've got a chip on my shoulder.

This begs a very serious question, not about the ability of the device to record video while driving, but about the access to information it provides anytime, anywhere: Why should someone be allowed to have a "screen" present before their eyes, when they should be concentrating on driving the car and nothing else?

I recently saw the google glass on someones head for the first time. Before confirming it was I already asked the guy if he wasn't afraid to get the snot kicked out of him. I laughed shortly after I said it, I couldn't keep a straight face. The wearer actually asked me if I wanted him to take the glasses off. He'd be happy too. I said it was fine, I told him I am a Vlogger. Only mine is a bit more obviously attached to my head. It would be petty if I am fine video others, but not find being video-ed myself.

I like the off-center look of this video, I achieve the same effect by strapping a sony hdr-as15 to my head while "CarVlogging". The video is stabilized though, and from time to time the wide angle picks up my nose which I crop out. It records 1080p @ 60fps while Google glass does 720p according to the user I met. If you are interested you can check out my CarVlogs here and drop me a comment: http://youtube.com/TheDutchTexan

There are some dash-cam footage video's in there too. Traffic is always interesting and ever moving. One can never know what crosses in front of you. A warning though, there is some swearing in there, and my opinions might not be everyone cup of tea. But that makes us all human!

One benefit of the GG that I don't believe anyone has mentioned - unlike a dash cam, or a GoPro, if you get out of the car, the camera follows you. So many dash cam videos end with someone getting out of the car to check on crash victims, or to confront hatchet-wielding motorcyclists, etc., and often that action is off-screen.

Ah, that explains the rest of the car. The front pieces of the kit look like they could possibly increase aero efficiency (marginally) but I have difficulty seeing how that wing eliminates lift at any speed less than 100 mph. A more effective solution would have been a simple lip, or ducktail. And Honda should have installed that in the first place if it actually did anything to reduce drag. Whatever the case, it's mostly an appearance package.

Not in Cali, but I almost witnessed an accident during lunch today from someone turning from the left-hand left turn lane into the right lane...despite there being a car there.

I'm not defending the law, nor really care what lane he turned into, but I wouldn't call either of the roads a one way. I will agree that this is an awkward set up, but that probably why the traffic engineers left a gap in the solid line before the right turn only began. In fact, that far right lane might be one that splits into a right only.

It's clear by the rubber left on the road that many people incorrectly cross multiple lanes of traffic when making this right turn. To be honest, I'd do it myself if it made sense. The reason this situation sticks out to me is because it's the one point I got marked off on when I got my California license.

All said, I doubt anyone is going to get a ticket for such a maneuver, but if you end up part of an accident investigation where you made a right across multiple lanes, the fingers probably going to point your way.

OF anything, I've got a camera that's even dorkier than the Google Glass- Panasonic HX-A 100. Quality's decent, tho..

Agreed. I thought I'd see little icons showing how many fucking stars a particular restaurant had... or street names. Kind of a letdown. Pointless video.

Yeah man. Try putting some bass into it. Think Barry White... When I get excited, my voice goes up 2 octaves. Maybe it is the same for you.
